Dear Editors:
This is an entirely new letter which draws interesting and provocative comparisons and parallels of handedness, sexuality and fetuses.
I commend Ms. Feldhahn (AJC Wed. 7/7/04) for her presentation on the proposed marriage amendment, especially the relevance to the appeasement of Hitler. We all want to keep the sky from falling, and we just have to make sure it is sky hitting our head and not acorns.
The point essentially resolves itself to this: quirks of nature like left handers are morally the same as right handers, even though earlier the term left also meant worthless, clumsy and sinister (Anglo-Saxon, French and Latin, respectively)). Hence the thief's condition is quite different from that of the left hander, for while it may be a thief's nature to take things with his left hand,if that happens to be his hand of preference, it his not his nature to steal, but merely his profession; and that condition he can change immediately at will. The thief who is left handed may enter lawful society by having to give up no more than his thievery. Then, even though a left hander, he is lawfully accepted as a legitimate quirk of nature.
And so the only question is this: is the homosexual a quirk of nature or something treatable? If the former, then the answer as to rights to legitimate union is an immediate yes as with unions of left handed people. If the latter, then not.
Where do we get the answer? I can think of no better source than an objective world science (which still itself changes over time). But if these scientists cannot decide one way or the other after due study, then the presumption of natural quirkiness must be assumed; and then that condition must be honored in lawful society like the diverse handedness of people.
Interestingly enough this logic also means that fetuses are to be counted as lawful beings with the same rights as all, for it seems no consensus has yet been reached concerning souls. In the presence of this uncertainty, and since there is a legal presumption of wellness and health regarding the left hander, there is likewise a legal presumption of human rights regarding the fetus. In other words, if you accept homosexuality on the basis that it is a quirk of nature, you also have to reject abortion. And if you reject homosexuality on this basis, you are then forced to accept abortion.
