Letter to the Atlanta Journal/Constitution of 1/10/02 in response to a letter from a Mr. Robertson calling upon Christians to protest against the prominent status accorded gays in the inauguration of a new mayor of Atlanta.
Mr. Robertson's citation of scripture as condemning gay living (AJC 1/9/02) expresses one of two great traditions in the Christian faith, a distinction which is not clear to non-Christians nor even to most Christians. His viewpoint represents the "Jewish" wing of the faith which considers the scripture as a law book with lots of do's and don't's. The other wing, the so-called "Gentile" Christian, doesn't accept any scriptural law whatsoever, but instead looks to the Golden Rule alone as the arbiter of conscience. And since it is impossible to derive a prohibition against gay living from this Rule, the Gentile Christian is entirely free in this regard.
